A Virtual Power Plant (VPP) is a networked system that aggregates the capacities of heterogeneous distributed energy resources such as wind farms, solar parks, batteries, and flexible power consumers. By using advanced software and communication technology, a VPP can coordinate these resources to operate as a single entity to optimize energy production and imbalances.
We define Origination as range of activities and processes aimed at developing and structuring tailor-made energy supply contracts and financial products to meet specific needs of clients such as utilities, industrial consumers, and producers. This can include negotiating long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs), creating structured products for risk management (e.g., hedging against price volatility), and developing innovative financing solutions for renewable energy projects.
Guarantees of Origin are certificates that prove that a given batch of electricity was generated from renewable energy sources. They are mainly used within Europe to promote transparency and offer consumers the choice to support renewable energy production. Each certificate represents the generation of one megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity.
I-RECs serve a similar purpose as Guarantees of Origin but are used globally, particularly in countries where no local certification system exists. These certificates provide a reliable way to claim and verify the consumption of renewable energy. Like GOs, each I-REC represents one MWh of renewable electricity generated and injected into the grid, ensuring that energy used by the certificate holder is sourced from renewables.
